Gear Guides

Fitness gear is sold with a great deal of vocabulary and very little plain guidance. Our gear guides exist to explain what actually matters when you are choosing equipment as a beginner: how a walking shoe should fit and which features are worth paying for, what the different types of resistance band are and what their labels really mean, and which claims on the box you can safely ignore.
A few things to know about how we write these. We do not recommend specific brands or models, we have not tested products, and at present there are no affiliate links in this section. Where we cite guidance, it comes from sources such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and public health bodies rather than from manufacturers. Our aim is to help you buy once, buy something that fits your needs, and then stop thinking about equipment and get on with moving. For most beginners that means comfortable shoes and, eventually, a small set of bands; nothing here will tell you that you need more than that.
If you have persistent foot pain, a condition that affects your feet, or any injury, footwear and equipment choices are best made with advice from a podiatrist, physiotherapist or your doctor rather than from a general guide.
